Lake and Fishing

Lac Courte Oreilles is the eighth largest natural lake in Wisconsin.  The lake was formed by the Wisconsin glacier over 10,000 years ago.  Lac Courte Oreilles along with Grindstone, Little Lac Courte Oreilles, and Whitefish make up the chain of lakes.  These lake are not flowages or reservoirs ... they are fed by springs and artesian wells  ... making them some of the clearest lakes in the state. 

Lac Courte Oreilles is a great fishery.  The legal size limit on musky has been 50" since 1996 providing excellent trophy oppurtunities for generations to come.  The largest mounted musky in the world (can be seen locally at the Moccasin Bar in Hayward) is a product of Lac Courte Oreilles.  This fish, caught by Cal Johnson in 1949 was 67 lb., 8 oz. and measured 60-1/4 inches!

The small mouth bass and walleye fishing have been coming on strong in recent years as well.  During the '07 season, we had 3 walleyes in the 9-10 pound class ... a nice trophy for anyone's wall!

    This fish was caught on July 21, 2008 by Nathan Wheeler. The muskie weighed between 28-30# and measured 46".  Nathan successfully released the fish .... Congratulations  Nathan!
